A bit of the same.....

I really don't have much to blog about. Life has been pretty much more of the same thing. But that's not a bad thing. The kids has spring break earlier in the month and we had planned to go to the beach and the zoo, but it rained the entire week. So when we caught a few glimpses of sun, we did some fun stuff around here close to us. We picked strawberries at a place called Ottawa farms and we also played at the playground here in our community. My kids think that is the greatest thing ever. Mark is one take home final and one final project away from being done with his first semester at Georgia Tech. It was a tough semester for him so I know he is glad to be just about done. We had to take down our swingset this past week which my kids were not at all happy about. But we got a letter from our Home owner's association which said they did not allow metal swingsets and we had 1 week to take it down or get fined $100 a day. That sucks, so down it went. We are hoping to get a kit from Home Depot to build a new wooden one. Mark has 10 days off of school so that's when we want to build the swingset and also paint. Our house still has the boring white walls it received from the builders. I have got to do something about that. So if anyone feels like coming to help paint, I wouldn't turn you away!

Happy 1st Birthday

I can't believe Joseph is a year old already! We had a great birthday party at Grandma and Grandpa's house. As usual, the other kids and mom and dad were WAAAYYY more excited about the party than the birthday boy was. But he had a good time and enjoyed his cake for about 3 minutes and then was done with it. He was mad because the more he tried to get the frosting off his face, the more it smeared. It was very entertaining to watch! Happy birthday Joseph, we love you!

Keeping it together.....

It is still amazing to me, even after so many times, how things come into your life right when you need them the most. My mother-in-law let me borrow this little book by Mary Ellen Edmunds titled Keeping it Together in a Pull-Apart World. When I say "little", I mean it. It is only 57 pages and only 4x6 in size. It would take 30 minutes tops for me to read it. But instead of doing just that, I let it sit in my bookshelf for a few weeks. I finally pulled it out the other day when I was having somewhat of a terrible time. I came across a section that really put things into perspective for me when I was feeling a bit down. As women, particularly mothers, and as people in general, we far too often compare ourselves with people around us. Even when they aren't in competition with us, we put ourselves in competition with them. On this particular day, I was feeling like I wasn't a good enough mother, wife, housekeeper, and I wasn't doing enough reading of my scriptures, or I'm not exercising enough, or i'm not training for a marathon like every-other person I know, I'm not getting enough education or reading enough books. Everyone was doing better than me. They may not have known it, but I sure felt like it. But let me show you this excerpt from the book that made all the difference. Don't get me for plagiarism, I'm giving Mary Ellen Edmunds the credit. Here goes:
"Avoid unnecessary competition: I think there's probably a better word than unnecessary here, but what I mean is to avoid the competition that creates a pull-apart world. It's too prevalent in our lives, I think-the focus on winning (or making sure our children always win). An unrealistic need to always be first can create excessive tension, anxiety, aggression, and terrible disappointment.
"Do we too often seem to compare ourselves with and compete against everybody about everything? How stressful is that! Could we just settle down and not have to be the best and first in everything? Remember Paul's analogy (in I Corinthians 12), where he teaches that each of us who is a part of the whole is unique, and we each matter. He taught that when one member suffers, all the members suffer with it--but when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
"So, even though you really felt it was what YOU wanted to do, let Vivian have her turn in the nursery, and be happy for her! Rejoice with her! We need to come closer together and eliminate that which pulls us apart. Remember: If we each gained ten pounds, we'd all be closer together!"
Sorry that this post ended up being so long, but I just wanted everyone to read that because I think that we all suffer from this in some degree. This just helped me understand that I don't need to worry about what everyone else is doing--I just need to worry about and be me! And I'm ok with that!

Our new home?

I think I found our next home! This beautiful property is called Middleton Plantation and is in Charleston, SC. I have never been there before, but will definitely make it a point to get there this summer. If you know me at all, you know that I am a sucker for history. This is going to be right up my alley. For a bit more info go to http://www.middletonplace.org/. It's too bad the original house isn't still standing--I bet it was beautiful!

Easter

I hope everyone had a great Easter this year! We had a blast at grandma's house hunting for eggs and playing with our friends. McKenna was very proud of losing her front tooth and was showing everybody. I thought I would share a few pics....

Manners

Growing up, good manners were not an option, but a must. My parents used to threaten us that if we had bad table manners we would have to eat outside with the dogs. That always made me chuckle a little because we didn't have any dogs. Nevertheless, we didn't want to have to eat outside, especially in winter. I even had friends who were terrified of joining us for dinner after I told them they had to watch their manners because my parents were manner nazis. But I must say that I am very grateful for their teaching. I can not stand to watch someone eat their dinner while laying on the table and chewing with their mouth open. But I will say there are some things I don't do that my parents taught me. For example, sorry mom and dad but I don't cut my sandwich in half. I never have. I also lick my fingers which is one topic my parents disagreed on. Now that I have kids of my own, I have tried to pass on the torch of good table manners. Well I am married to a southerner. Now don't get me wrong, Mark has come a LOOOONG way at the dinner table, but there are some habits I just can't fix. (Talk to my dad if you want to know about Mark's previous table habits). The kids happen to pick up on those bad manners more quickly than the good ones. They know that drinking out of their bowl is not allowed, but how do you tell them no when their dad is at the table doing the same thing? Now it's a game and they think it's hilarious when they do it. McKenna likes to call Pappy just to tell him that she did it. Kaitlyn is innocent and doesn't do it just for laughs. She actually drinks the milk out of her bowl BEFORE she eats the cereal. If you look closely, you can still see the Chex in her bowl. But overall they are pretty well-mannered at the table. Now all we have to work on is that pesky burping!

I couldn't leave this post without putting up pictures of my boys. I am very proud of Joseph's teeth. He is my only child to have more than one tooth at their first birthday! Also, Jacob wanted me to take a picture of him walking on the roots of one of grandma's trees. He thought that was pretty cool!

Tagged

Ok, Andrea tagged me to tell about my husband. Here goes......

1. His name: Mark Allen Lowther, Jr

2. How long have you been married? 7 Years 7 months

3. How long did you date? Well, that's a good question. We started dating in January 1997, spent the summer apart, spent 1 semester together, another semester apart and then 2 years apart while he was on his mission. We got married 3 months after he got home in Aug 2000. So if anyone can figure out how long we dated, please let me know.

4. Who eats more sweets? That's a no-brainer: ME!

5. Who said 'I love you' first? Mark did--left a message for me with my roommate Tina to tell me goodnight and that he loved me.

6. Who is Taller? Unlike Andrea's sarcasm in her answer, this one is close. I will give the edge to Mark though, but not by much.

7. Who can sing better? Mark

8. Who is smarter? Um yeah, Mark.

9. Who does the laundry? Are you kidding me? I don't even let him in the laundry room after I found a load that had white underwear, jeans and towels among other things. I think he intentionally got banned from the laundry room because there's no way he could possible be that clueless about laundry is there?

10. Who pays the bills? Depends on the month, but usually Mark.

11. Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? Mark

12. Who cooks dinner? Usually me, but Mark does help out when he can. He is definitely the breakfast cook. I can't make a pancake to save my life.

13. Who drives? Mark, unless he has to study.

14. Who is more stubborn? I tell him that he is, but it's definitely me.

15. Who kissed who first? It just kind of happened--no one can take credit. We were arguing (playfully) and then we were kissing.

16. Who asked who out first? Tina. Yep, gotta give her the credit. She would ask Mark to come swimming with she and I and then she would bail at the last minute saying something came up. This happened several times, so those were our first "dates" I guess you could say.

17. Who proposed? Mark did.

18. Who wears the pants? Well I like to give Mark ideas and let him think they are his. It works out well, I get what I want and he thinks it was his fantastic idea! :)

I love you babe! You are the best decision I ever made!
